When home skin care products and traditional facials aren't as effective as they use to be, but you aren't ready for a more invasive treatment, consider nonsurgical skin rejuvenation therapies, like microneedling. Boise, ID Plastic Surgeon Dr. Dean E. Sorensen is pleased to offer microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) to patients seeking a new way to get healthy skin. Microneedling uses a handheld device that contains many fine-gauge needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries (tiny punctures) in the needed areas of the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the body's natural production of collagen and elastin, two important nutrients that increase the health and appearance of your skin. Our Boise, ID office is proud to use the SkinPen microneedling device, the only FDA-approved instrument of its kind. Easily combined with other skin treatments, like serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma), microneedling can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars, dull texture, and pores. Schedule a consultation at Sorensen Cosmetic Surgery Center to learn more about the benefits of microneedling and ways to customize the treatment for your skin needs and goals.

"I had breast augmentation surgery and I am very pleased with the results. Dr. Sorensen spent time with me explaining the procedure and I appreciated the follow up visit before the surgery to make..."- R.S. / Yahoo / Oct 27, 2019
"I had implant removal procedure 10 months ago. I had evaluations with several other doctors. Their evaluations felt sterile and impersonal. Dr Sorensen and his team explained every step of the process and were always available for questions. I was very impressed with the courtesy, professionalism, efficiency and the overall quality of providers and nurses who work with Dr Sorensen and the rest of the surgical team. Since then, I have been seeing Dr Sorensen’s aesthetician Katie for micro-needling. I had very severe adult acne with scarring. I have always had beautiful skin up until about 3 years ago. I had my third mico-needling treatment today. My skin is so much better now. It is finally acne free with only a few areas of redness to my t zone, and I am confident that these will be gone in a few weeks. It is so nice to be able to go without makeup and feel good about my skin once again. It was not expensive and well worth it. I am so grateful to Dr Sorensen and his team. They’re a fabulous and amazing group of people. I highly recommended the services that Dr Sorensen and his team provide."- A.F. / Google / Jan 13, 2019

You may benefit from microneedling if you have slight to moderate skin issues, like rough skin texture, a dull skin tone, mild scars, or low elasticity. Microneedling treatments can also reduce the appearance of stretch marks. The results following a microneedling treatment are not immediate so it is important that patients that have this treatment understand that the results can take time. This is due to the regeneration of collagen and elastin that is stimulated during treatment. Both of these nutrients, once active, will help provide the healthier, more vibrant complexion you are after.
Microneedling is performed in a treatment room in about 30 – 60 minutes with numbing cream or a local anesthesia if requested, but most patients feel mild or no discomfort. The skin being treated will be cleansed before the microneedling handpiece is passed evenly over. This process creates tiny punctures in the skin that will be slightly visible. If a part of your treatment plan after the microneedling is performed, a topical treatment, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a vitamin-infused serum, can be applied for deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin. A moisturizer will be massaged in along with sunscreen since your skin will be sensitive after the treatment.
What to Expect
You may have some swelling and redness for about a day, but this should subside quickly on its own. It may take about 1 – 2 months as the collagen and elastin levels increase before you see visible improvements in the health and appearance of your skin. You should plan to get about 4 – 6 maintenance treatments every 4 – 6 weeks for optimal results and lasting skin health.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does microneedling cost?
The cost for microneedling will vary, depending on what is included in your treatment plan. During your initial consultation, we will perform a skin analysis and then develop a specific program of rejuvenation for your skin. From there, we will be able to review your costs and what to expect during the procedure.
What exactly is microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a nonsurgical treatment to tighten and rejuvenate your skin. Collagen is a fibrous protein that helps keep your skin supple, smooth, and tight. Over time, your natural stores of collagen are depleted and your skin becomes thin and loses elasticity. Microneedling creates small wounds in your skin. These micro-injuries prompt your skin to increase its collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. Once healed, your skin appears brighter, firmer, and healthier.
Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
During the microneedling process, channels are created in your skin that make it easier for treatments to penetrate the deeper layers. This is why microneedling is often combined with other treatments, like vitamin-rich serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling with PRP has become known as the Vampire Facial and offers excellent results for many of our Boise, ID patients. In addition, it is common for patients to receive BOTOX or a filler treatment to help optimize the appearance of your skin.
How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Most patients get 3 – 6 microneedling sessions to achieve their best results. However, the number of treatments you need will depend on the condition of your skin and your goals. Microneedling can be safely performed every 4 – 6 weeks as needed.
Is microneedling safe for everyone?
For the most part, microneedling is safe for all skin types and tones. Since the skin injuries created are so small, there are very few side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be applied to most areas of skin, including the face, neck, arms, thighs, chest, and lower legs. Microneedling is not recommended if you have used Accutane within the last 2 – 3 months, as well as if you have herpes simplex, an open wound, or active skin infection. In addition, you may not be a candidate for microneedling if you are pregnant, nursing, or undergoing radiation treatments.
