About PRP Therapy
Boise, ID plastic surgeon Dean E. Sorensen is pleased to offer platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) at Sorensen Cosmetic Surgery Center to help rejuvenate your appearance. PRP therapy is one of the newer and most popular cosmetic treatments on the aesthetic market because of its natural method and promising results. It utilizes your own plasma to stimulate your skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is also helpful in treating surface irregularities, such as texture and tone. It can also be combined with microneedling to blend two powerful treatments into what is known as the Vampire Facial (or Vampire Facelift). If you are interested in PRP therapy, contact Sorensen Cosmetic Surgery Center in Boise, ID to schedule a private consultation. We will be happy to discuss all the benefits of PRP and how it can help to improve your skin.

"I had implant removal procedure 10 months ago. I had evaluations with several other doctors. Their evaluations felt sterile and impersonal. Dr Sorensen and his team explained every step of the process and were always available for questions. I was very impressed with the courtesy, professionalism, efficiency and the overall quality of providers and nurses who work with Dr Sorensen and the rest of the surgical team. Since then, I have been seeing Dr Sorensen’s aesthetician Katie for micro-needling. I had very severe adult acne with scarring. I have always had beautiful skin up until about 3 years ago. I had my third mico-needling treatment today. My skin is so much better now. It is finally acne free with only a few areas of redness to my t zone, and I am confident that these will be gone in a few weeks. It is so nice to be able to go without makeup and feel good about my skin once again. It was not expensive and well worth it. I am so grateful to Dr Sorensen and his team. They’re a fabulous and amazing group of people. I highly recommended the services that Dr Sorensen and his team provide."- A.F. / Google / Jan 13, 2019

Patients who want to rejuvenate their skin tone and texture and who are seeking a nonsurgical way to improve mild lines and wrinkles are typically great candidates for PRP therapy. Since it naturally promotes collagen production, it is also a great treatment option if you have tired or dull-looking skin. Talk to our team if you have any known skin conditions, blood disorders, or anemia to ensure that it is safe for you to receive PRP therapy.
Once you are seated comfortably in one of our private treatment rooms, a small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm and placed in a centrifuge machine. Typically, we draw about four tablespoons or one vial worth of blood. After about 15 minutes, the different components of the blood will be separated and ready for injection. We will place the concentrated plasma into a sterile syringe and inject it into the designated areas of the face. The PRP process usually only takes about five minutes, but this will vary for each patient. If microneedling is performed with PRP, the microneedling aspect will take place first, followed by PRP injections, which will absorb into the micro-punctures made by the SkinPen.
What to Expect
Platelet-rich plasma naturally promotes collagen production and elastin to create tighter and younger-looking skin. Since it utilizes your own blood, there is no risk of allergic or adverse reactions. You should expect your face to be a little red after treatment as some traces of red blood cells will be included in the plasma injection. A cold pack can be applied to the injection site to ease any discomfort or minor swelling. We recommend you receive treatments every 4 – 6 weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does PRP therapy cost?
Treatment costs for PRP therapy will vary and will be dependent on the size and number of areas being treated. If it is combined with another cosmetic procedure, the price will increase. If more than one treatment is recommended, we have different plans to consider. Thus, be sure to ask us about the specials we are offering on PRP treatments, as well as payment options.
How long do results from PRP therapy last?
PRP therapy has been known to last for 4 – 8 weeks. The longevity of the results will vary with each patient and will depend on the area being treated. In addition, lifestyle can also vary how long the results will last (for example, sun exposure, different climates, exercise, etc.). The benefit of this procedure is that it does not require surgery or significant downtime and is more affordable.
What are the risks and complications of PRP therapy?
The risks for PRP therapy by itself are extremely minor and include only some bruising and swelling. When combined with microneedling, potential risks may include infection, mild scarring, pigment changes, and delayed healing. That’s why it’s important to have microneedling done by a skilled practitioner who has studied the process and who will know if your skin is appropriate for the treatment. Dr. Sorensen has extensive training in PRP therapy and will consult with each patient to determine what will work best for them.
Will PRP help replenish volume?
A treatment of PRP therapy cannot increase volume in areas, like your cheeks and lips. Although PRP therapy offers stunning results since it rejuvenates the appearance of the skin and helps promote the production of collagen and elastin, it will not replenish volume. If you wish to contour certain areas on the face that have lost volume, then dermal fillers may be a better treatment choice for you.
Is PRP therapy painful?
PRP injections feel similar to a dermal filler or BOTOX injection but with the additional step of the plasma extraction. Typically, most patients will feel a mild pinch or pressure at the time of injection. If you are concerned about pain or discomfort, ask about including local anesthesia during your consultation.
